What are Superlift extension forks?

Extension forks are a Genie accessory that insert onto the standard forks of any Superlift material lift, extending their reach by 64cm. The longer fork length gives you a wider, more stable base for items that overhang the standard forks — air-con units, long ducting sections, large signage, awkwardly-shaped fixtures, sheet materials and similar bulky loads.

Standard Superlift forks are sized for the typical compact installation load. Extension forks are what you use when the load is bigger than the forks can comfortably hold.

Important — load centre and reduced SWL

This is the single most important thing to understand about extension forks: adding length moves the load centre further from the mast, which reduces the lift's safe working load.

The capacities published for each Superlift model (454kg for the SL10, 363kg for the SL15, 295kg for the SL24) are based on the standard 460mm load centre. As soon as you extend the forks, the load centre moves outward — and the lift's safe capacity drops accordingly. The further the load sits from the mast, the lower the SWL.

Always refer to the load centre capacity data for your specific Superlift model before lifting on extended forks. The lift's load chart will show you the reduced SWL for different load centre distances. Don't assume the standard SWL transfers when forks are extended.

This isn't a hire-firm disclaimer — it's basic cantilever engineering. Overloading a lift on extended forks is a real-world cause of material-lift accidents, and the safe operating envelope is significantly different from standard-fork operation. If in doubt, don't lift. Call us and we'll help you confirm safe capacity for your specific load and Superlift model.

When to use extension forks

You need extension forks when the load is bigger than the standard forks can comfortably handle. Typical examples:

  • Long ducting sections that overhang the standard forks at one or both ends
  • Large air-conditioning cassettes and condenser units with a wide footprint
  • Suspended ceiling frames and large light fittings
  • Large signage — internal and external commercial signs
  • Bulky shopfitting fixtures — counters, display units, panelling
  • Sheet materials — large plasterboard, plywood, insulation panels
  • HVAC plant components with awkward dimensions
  • Long pipework sections for sprinkler and services installation
  • Large electrical equipment — distribution boards, panels, switchgear

If the standard forks can hold the load securely and stably, you don't need extensions. If the load wobbles, overhangs significantly, or sits awkwardly on the standard forks, extensions are the safer option.

Key features

  • 64cm additional fork length — significantly more support area for bulky loads
  • Insert-on fitting — slides onto the standard forks; no tools, no fixings
  • Quick to attach and remove — swap between standard and extended forks as the job requires
  • Genuine Genie accessory — designed and built for the Superlift range
  • Fully inspected before every hire

How to use extension forks safely

  1. Check compatibility — confirm the extensions match the Superlift model you're using
  2. Fit the extensions to the standard forks — slide on fully, ensure they're seated and any securing pins/clips are engaged
  3. Consult the load chart for your Superlift model and confirm the reduced SWL at the extended load centre distance
  4. Weigh or confirm the load — don't guess; if you're not certain of the load weight, weigh it before lifting
  5. Position the load as close to the mast as possible — even on extended forks, keeping the load centre near the mast preserves more of the lift's capacity than placing it at the very tip
  6. Use the non-slip pad and load straps as appropriate to keep the load secure
  7. Lift slowly and steadily — extended-fork lifts are inherently less stable than standard-fork lifts; smooth winch action prevents sway
  8. Never exceed the reduced SWL — even briefly
  9. Remove the extensions when the job is done and return them with the rest of the hire kit

If you're not sure how to read the load centre capacity chart for your Superlift, call us before lifting. Two minutes on the phone is significantly less expensive than an accident.

Frequently asked questions

What do Genie Superlift extension forks do? Extension forks insert onto the standard forks of a Genie Superlift material lift, adding 64cm of fork length. This gives a longer, more stable platform for bulky or oversized loads that wouldn't sit safely on the standard forks alone.

Do extension forks reduce the lift's capacity? Yes — significantly. The published SWL for each Superlift model is based on the standard 460mm load centre. Extending the forks moves the load centre outward, which reduces the lift's safe working load. Always refer to the specific load centre capacity chart for your Superlift model before lifting.

Which Superlift models do the extension forks fit? They fit the entire Genie Superlift range — SL10, SL10 Straddle Base, SL15 and SL24. The forks themselves are the same across the range; what changes is the safe capacity at different load centres for each model.

How quickly do extension forks fit on? Seconds. They insert directly onto the standard forks without tools or fixings — slide on, confirm seating, and you're ready to lift.

Can I leave the extensions in place for the whole job? You can, but you don't have to. If part of your job involves heavy compact loads (better on standard forks) and part involves bulky lighter loads (better on extensions), you can swap between configurations as the work requires.

Can I hire extension forks on their own, without a Superlift? The extension forks are a Genie Superlift-specific accessory — they only fit Genie Superlift material lifts. If you're hiring a Superlift from elsewhere, the extensions can be hired separately, but they won't fit any other manufacturer's lift.

Do you deliver extension forks? Yes — they're added to any Superlift hire and delivered alongside the lift, across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas. Nationwide delivery available on request.

Is it cheaper to hire extensions than buy them? For almost everyone, yes — the extensions are an occasional-use accessory used a few times a year alongside Superlift hire, not a piece of equipment that justifies outright purchase for most contractors.
