This annual event recognises the district’s best teams, coaches, volunteers, sportsmen and sportswomen across a number of categories.
This year’s winners of the Junior Team of the Year award were the Joseph Whitaker School Boys U13 Cricket Team, made up of mostly year eight with a few year seven pupils the youngsters competed in a range of ‘Chance to Shine’ cricket competitions, which are aimed to develop all round cricket players.
The team became indoor county champions in February 2016 going unbeaten throughout the tournament which was run by Nott’s County Cricket Club.
This meant that they qualified to the midlands regional final where the team played schools from Leicester, Northants, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Oxfordshire. In the final they played Canterbury Academy and had to chase down 79 runs managing to knock off this total with ten balls to spare and so became the school’s first National Sporting Champions.
Hall-Fast founder and MD Malcolm Hall MBE presented the team with their trophy in front of a packed audience at the newly refurbished Civic Quarter in Mansfield.
