Hire 12-tonne steerable machine skates from Hall-Fast — the safe, controlled way to move heavy machinery, plant and equipment across finished floors without forklifts, cranes or floor damage. This three-point load moving system combines a steerable front skate with two axle-linked rear skates for stable, manoeuvrable movement of loads up to 12 tonnes. Large-diameter plastic rollers protect finished, painted and warehouse floor surfaces, while the non-slip platform keeps loads secure during the move. Available for daily, weekend and weekly hire, with fast delivery across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby and the surrounding Midlands and Yorkshire regions.

What are steerable machine skates?

Machine skates (also known as load moving skates, machinery skates, equipment dollies or load rollers) are heavy-duty roller platforms used to move large, heavy items horizontally across a floor. Position the skates under the load, take the weight, and the rollers let you push, pull and steer the load to its new position — often with nothing more than manual effort and a pry bar.

This 12-tonne system uses a three-point configuration:

  • One steerable front skate with a turning mechanism for direction control
  • Two rear skates linked by an axle that stay aligned and parallel during the move
  • Non-slip load platform on each skate to keep the load locked in place

The three-point design is significantly easier and safer to use than four individual skates: the steerable front gives you proper directional control, and the axle-linked rears mean the back of the load can't drift off-line as you push.

Why hire 12-tonne steerable machine skates?

When the load is too heavy for a pallet truck, too far inside a building for a forklift, or sitting on a floor that mustn't be damaged, machine skates are usually the right answer. They cost a fraction of crane hire, leave the floor untouched, and a competent two-person team can move a 12-tonne machine across a factory floor with very little fuss.

Hire from Hall-Fast and you get:

  • Three-point steerable system — better control than individual skates
  • 12 tonne safe working load — handles serious industrial machinery
  • Plastic rollers — kinder to finished floor surfaces than steel
  • Large-diameter rollers for even weight distribution and minimum floor pressure
  • Non-slip platforms to prevent load slippage during the move
  • Rear skates pre-set to axle alignment — no manual measuring or re-squaring
  • Fully inspected before every hire
  • Flexible hire periods — daily, weekend and weekly rates
  • Fast delivery and collection across the Midlands and Yorkshire

Specifications

Always assess the suitability of the floor surface before use. Machine skates are designed for hard, flat, level surfaces — they're not suitable for inclines, gravel, soft floors or surfaces with significant thresholds, cables or gaps.

Steel rollers vs plastic rollers — why it matters

Most cheaper machine skates use steel rollers. Ours don't, and there's a real reason for that.

Steel rollers:

  • Higher load capacity per roller (smaller skate footprint)
  • Greater rolling resistance — harder to push
  • Mark, dent or scratch finished floor surfaces — a serious problem in showrooms, factories, warehouses with sealed floors, and any retail or office environment
  • Make significantly more noise

Plastic rollers (our skates):

  • Slightly larger footprint for the same SWL
  • Lower rolling resistance — easier to push
  • Protect finished floor surfaces — don't mark, dent or scratch sealed, painted or coated floors
  • Quieter in operation

If you're moving a machine across a factory or warehouse where the floor is sealed, painted, epoxy-coated or polished concrete, plastic-rollered skates are essentially mandatory unless you want to be re-coating the floor afterwards.

What are 12-tonne steerable machine skates used for?

The 12-tonne system handles serious industrial loads. Typical applications include:

  • Industrial machinery moves — lathes, mills, presses, CNC machines
  • Production line relocations — moving manufacturing equipment within or between facilities
  • Generator and compressor moves — large standby and industrial units
  • Plant relocation — pumps, motors, electrical switchgear
  • Workshop equipment moves — heavy benches, machine tools, fixed assemblies
  • HVAC and chiller plant — large rooftop and ground-level units (after crane offload)
  • Transformer and substation equipment moves
  • Heavy commercial appliances — bakery ovens, industrial laundry equipment, large refrigeration
  • Safes and vault doors for security installations
  • Heavy office and retail fixtures — large display cabinets, server racks, archive cabinets
  • Exhibition and event installations — large display stands and equipment
  • Boat, vehicle and trailer positioning in workshop environments
  • Factory and warehouse fit-out moves where forklift access is restricted

For machinery dealers, plant maintenance teams, factory operations managers and industrial movers, this kind of skate set is one of the most-used pieces of kit on the job — particularly in environments where forklifts can't reach and cranes are overkill.

Key features

  • Three-point steerable configuration — far easier to operate than four individual skates
  • 12 tonne safe working load for the complete system
  • Steerable front skate with proper directional control
  • Axle-linked rear skates that stay aligned and parallel
  • Large diameter plastic rollers for low floor impact and lower rolling resistance
  • Non-slip platform pads to prevent load slippage during the move
  • No power source required — manual operation
  • Compact storage and transport between jobs

Safe operation — the basics

Machine skates look simple, and they are — but moving a 12-tonne load is unforgiving when something goes wrong. A few non-negotiables:

  1. Assess the floor before use — must be hard, flat, level, and free from cracks, thresholds, expansion joints or trailing cables that the rollers could catch on
  2. Check the load's centre of gravity — distribute weight evenly across the three skates
  3. Confirm clearance and route — plan the route from start to finish, including any pinch points, door widths and overhead obstacles
  4. Lift the load onto the skates correctly — use proper jacking equipment (toe jacks, hydraulic jacks, machinery jacks) — never use prybars or improvised lifting
  5. Use the non-slip pads properly — make sure the load is sitting fully on the pad, not just resting on the platform edge
  6. Push, don't pull — pushing keeps you out from under the load if something fails
  7. Never use machine skates on inclines — even a small slope can let a 12-tonne load run away
  8. Use multiple operators on heavy loads — one steering, one or two on the rear, one watching clearances
  9. Wear safety boots and gloves — and hi-vis on commercial sites
  10. Lower the load fully before removing the skates — never leave a load balanced on skates unattended

Moving heavy machinery is hazardous work. Make sure you have a written method statement and risk assessment in place before the move, and that all operators understand their roles. Where appropriate, machinery moves should be carried out by experienced rigging or moving specialists.

Frequently asked questions

What's the maximum load these machine skates can move? 12 tonnes, distributed across the three-point system. Don't exceed this — always confirm your load weight before booking, and add a margin for safety.

What's the difference between steerable and non-steerable machine skates? Steerable skates have a directional front skate that turns, letting you navigate around obstacles and into precise positions. Non-steerable skates can only roll in a straight line — fine for short, direct moves, but very limiting in tight or obstructed spaces.

Why plastic rollers rather than steel? Plastic rollers don't mark or damage finished floor surfaces — essential in warehouses, factories, showrooms, retail and any environment with sealed, painted, epoxy or polished concrete floors. They're also quieter and easier to push than equivalent steel rollers.

Can I use these skates outside? They're designed for hard, flat, level surfaces — typically internal floors. Outdoor use is only appropriate on smooth concrete or tarmac in good condition; not on gravel, cobbles or uneven ground.

Can I move a load up or down a slope with machine skates? No. Machine skates are designed for use on level surfaces only. Even small slopes can allow a heavy load to run away — and stopping 12 tonnes once it's rolling is genuinely dangerous. For sloping moves, use specialist tracked or wheeled equipment with proper braking.

How do I get the load onto the skates? Use proper machinery jacks — toe jacks, hydraulic bottle jacks, or dedicated machinery moving jacks — to lift the load high enough to position the skates underneath. Never improvise with prybars, levers or unstable supports.

Do I need a crane to lift the load first? Not necessarily — if the load is already on the floor, you can use machinery jacks to lift it just high enough to slide the skates underneath. A crane is only needed if the load is somewhere a jack can't reach.

How many people do I need to move a 12-tonne load on skates? Practically, you'll want at least two people — one on the steerable front skate, one watching the rear and the route. For heavier or more awkward loads, a third or fourth operator helps with control and clearance checking.

Do you deliver machine skates? Yes — we deliver across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas, with nationwide delivery available on request.

How long should I hire machine skates for? Most machinery moves take a day or weekend. For phased moves or multi-machine relocations, longer-term hire is available. Call us for a tailored quote.

Is hiring cheaper than buying machine skates? For almost everyone except dedicated industrial moving contractors, yes. Skates are intensive-use kit during a job and idle in between — hire saves on storage, capital and routine inspection costs.
