What is a plasterers trestle?

A plasterers trestle (also known as a builders trestle or steel trestle) is a free-standing, A-frame support designed to be used in pairs with staging boards laid across the top, forming a wide, stable platform to walk and work on at low to mid heights.

Built from heavy-duty steel for serious site use, plasterers trestles are the trade-standard solution wherever you need a working platform that's quicker, lighter and more flexible than a full scaffold tower — perfect for indoor jobs, room-by-room work and tight access situations where larger access equipment won't fit.

Why hire plasterers trestles from Hall-Fast?

Trestles see heavy use during a job and then sit idle between projects — which makes them an obvious hire item rather than a buy. They're also bulky and awkward to store, especially in pairs or larger sets.

When you hire from Hall-Fast you get:

  • Fully inspected, ready-to-use steel trestles in good working condition
  • Designed to be paired with our 10ft staging boards for a complete platform solution
  • Flexible hire periods — daily, weekly or long-term
  • Fast delivery and collection across the Midlands and Yorkshire
  • Expert advice on the right number of trestles and boards for your job
  • Competitive hire rates with no hidden extras

Key features of our hire plasterers trestles

  • Heavy-duty steel construction for long working life and serious load capacity
  • Stable A-frame design with wide base for excellent on-floor stability
  • Multiple board levels so you can set your working height to suit the job
  • Designed for pairing with staging boards to create a wide, safe platform
  • Folds for easier transport and storage between jobs
  • Tradesman's standard — proven on site by plasterers, decorators and builders for decades

How to use plasterers trestles safely

Trestles and staging boards are simple to set up but need to be used correctly to be safe:

  1. Set both trestles on solid, level ground at a spacing slightly less than the length of your staging board
  2. Open each trestle fully so the locking mechanism engages
  3. Set both trestles to the same height by placing the staging board on matching board levels
  4. Lay the staging board across the top so it sits flat with even overhang at both ends
  5. Check the board is stable before stepping on — it should not rock, slide or tilt
  6. Climb on and off carefully, keeping your weight central where possible
  7. Don't overload — keep tools, materials and operators within the board's safe working load

For longer spans or higher working loads, use multiple boards side by side or additional trestles. Always work to current Working at Height regulations and your employer's risk assessment.

What are plasterers trestles used for?

Trestles are one of the most versatile pieces of low-level access equipment on a building site. Used with staging boards, they're perfect for:

  • Plastering walls and ceilings
  • Painting and decorating stairwells, hallways and high walls
  • Skimming and finishing plasterboard
  • Glazing and window installation
  • Cornice and coving installation
  • Loft conversions — working between joists at a safe, stable height
  • Cladding and timber framing
  • Shopfitting and signage installation
  • General building repairs and renovation

Their portability and adjustable height make them especially popular for interior work in occupied buildings, where a full scaffold tower would be overkill and a stepladder would be unsafe for the size of the job.

Frequently asked questions

What is a plasterers trestle used for? A plasterers trestle is used in pairs with staging boards laid across the top to create a wide, stable working platform at low to mid heights. They're widely used by plasterers, decorators, painters, glaziers and builders for indoor and outdoor work.

Do I need staging boards as well as trestles? Yes — trestles are designed to work with staging boards. The trestles support the boards, and the boards form the platform you walk and work on. We hire both — call us for a combined trestle and staging board hire quote.

How many trestles do I need? For a standard 10ft staging board, you'll need at least two trestles — one at each end. For longer spans or multiple boards, you may need additional trestles. Our team can advise based on the length of your run and the type of work.

Are plasterers trestles adjustable for height? Yes — our trestles have multiple board levels so you can set your working height to suit the job, from low-level decorating right up to ceiling work.

Can I use trestles outdoors? Yes, as long as the ground is solid and level. Always check the footing before working at height, and don't use trestles on soft, sloping or unstable surfaces.

Do you deliver plasterers trestles? Yes — we deliver across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas, with nationwide delivery available on request.

Is hiring cheaper than buying trestles? For most tradespeople and contractors, yes — especially when you factor in storage, transport and the occasional nature of trestle use. Hiring also means you always work with inspected, well-maintained kit.

How long can I hire trestles for? We offer flexible hire periods — daily, weekly or long-term — to suit your project. Call us for a tailored quote.
