When you need a heavy electric concrete breaker
This is the breaker for serious demolition — not chasing out walls or lifting tiles. If you're tackling any of the following, the heavy electric breaker is the right tool:
- Driveways — breaking up old concrete or block paving sub-base
- Foundations — removing concrete footings, slabs and bases
- Floor slabs — internal concrete floors, garage floors, workshop floors
- Road surfaces — concrete and bituminous surfacing up to 300mm
- Compacted ballast — breaking up hard-packed aggregate
- Large concrete bases — outbuilding bases, machinery bases, shed bases that won't shift
- Heavy demolition — concrete walls, lintels, large structural elements
- Underpinning work — removing existing concrete during structural alterations
For breaking up patio slabs, removing screed, chasing walls or tile removal, you don't need this much breaker. The lighter medium concrete breaker is easier to handle and a better fit for those jobs.

Rule of thumb: medium breaker for things you could break with a sledgehammer if you had to. Heavy breaker for things you couldn't.
Key features
- 1900W of demolition power — built for depth and dense material
- 60J impact energy — genuinely heavy-class breaking force
- 1260 blows per minute — slower than a medium breaker, but each impact hits dramatically harder
- Breaks concrete up to 300mm thick — driveways, foundations, road surfaces
- 29kg weight — heavy enough to drive the impact into the work, light enough to handle vertically
- Choice of points, chisels and bolsters included with hire — tell us what you're breaking
- Electric power — quieter and lower-emission than a petrol breaker, suitable for indoor and residential work
- Fully inspected and PAT-tested before every hire
Important — power supply
Heavy electric breakers of this class are typically supplied as 110V site-voltage tools, which is the UK industry standard for safe site use. To run on a domestic 240V mains supply you'll need a step-down transformer, which we hire alongside the breaker — just ask when you book.
110V tools are mandatory on most professional sites because the lower voltage significantly reduces the risk of severe electric shock in wet, dusty or harsh working conditions.
How to use a heavy concrete breaker safely
A 29kg breaker delivering 60 joules per impact is a serious piece of kit. A few things to know before you start:
- Plan your work — mark out the slab in manageable sections and break from the edges inward
- Inspect the tool, lead, transformer and chisel before starting
- Wear full PPE — safety glasses, full-face shield if there's flying debris, ear defenders, dust mask (FFP3), gloves, steel-toe boots and high-vis if on a site
- Position yourself correctly — feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, breaker tucked into your body for control
- Let the weight of the tool do the work — don't lean on it, let the impact and gravity do the breaking
- Use the right tooling for the job — moil point for starting holes and through-slab work, chisel for spalling and edge work, bolster for cutting lines
- Damp down dust with a water mist for indoor and enclosed work
- Work in rotations with a second operator on long jobs — hand-arm vibration exposure builds fast on heavy breakers
- Take regular breaks — fatigue is the biggest cause of injuries with this size of tool
- Power off and unplug before changing tooling
Concrete dust contains crystalline silica, a serious long-term respiratory hazard. Use FFP3 masks and water suppression. Hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure limits apply — follow current HSE Control of Vibration at Work guidance, particularly on extended jobs.

Frequently asked questions
What's the heaviest concrete this breaker can handle? The 60J impact energy and 1900W motor make this breaker suitable for concrete slabs up to 300mm thick — that covers most domestic driveways, foundations, garage floors and standard road surfacing.
What's the difference between a medium and heavy concrete breaker? The heavy breaker is much more powerful (1900W vs 900W), delivers significantly more impact energy per blow, and can break far deeper and denser material. It's also heavier (29kg) and produces more vibration. The medium breaker is the better choice for patios, screed, tiles and light demolition; the heavy breaker is the right tool for driveways, foundations and serious demolition.
Will it run on a normal domestic socket? Heavy electric breakers of this class are typically 110V site-voltage tools. To run from a 240V domestic supply you'll need a step-down transformer — we hire those alongside the breaker. Confirm voltage when you book.
What tooling is included with the hire? Your choice of points, chisels and bolsters — tell us what you're breaking when you book, and we'll include the right tooling for the job.
Can one person operate the heavy breaker? Yes — one person can operate the breaker. However, the 29kg weight makes it a two-person lift for loading and unloading. For long jobs, plan operator rotation to manage fatigue and hand-arm vibration exposure.
How noisy is an electric breaker? Quieter and cleaner-running than a petrol breaker, which is why electric breakers are usually the better choice for indoor work and residential areas. Ear defenders are still essential.
Do you deliver heavy concrete breakers? Yes — we deliver across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas, with nationwide delivery available on request. Given the weight, delivery is often the easiest option even for short-distance hires.
How long should I hire a heavy concrete breaker for? For a typical residential driveway breakout, a weekend or short weekly hire is usually plenty. Larger commercial jobs may need longer-term hire — call us for a tailored quote.
Is hiring cheaper than buying a heavy breaker? For almost everyone except full-time demolition contractors, yes. A heavy breaker is intensive-use kit that's idle for long stretches between jobs — hire saves on storage, servicing and capital outlay, and you always work with inspected, well-maintained equipment.
