Specialist Aluminium MIG Welder with Pulse Technology

The Draper MWA160A is a specialist 160 amp inverter welder engineered specifically for welding aluminium, while still offering the flexibility of multi-process operation. Combining IGBT inverter technology, synergic wire feed, pulse welding, and DTi (Draper Technology Inside) digital control in a compact, portable unit, it gives fabricators and trade users the tools to produce clean, professional-quality welds on aluminium and other materials.

Key Features at a Glance

The MWA160A is packed with advanced features for serious welding work:

  • Pulse welding capability — essential for clean aluminium welds with minimal heat distortion
  • MIG/flux-cored/MMA multi-process operation
  • Gas and gasless welding for shielding gas or flux-cored wire
  • IGBT inverter technology for efficient, stable power delivery
  • Synergic wire feed automatically matches wire speed to amperage
  • DTi (Draper Technology Inside) with digital display and one-touch setting
  • TIG-Lift capability for additional process flexibility
  • Lightweight and portable at just 14kg, with integrated carry handle
  • Minimal spatter for cleaner welds and reduced clean-up

Built for Aluminium Welding

Welding aluminium is notoriously challenging — the material conducts heat rapidly, oxidises quickly, and is prone to burn-through and distortion. The MWA160A is engineered to overcome these challenges with pulse welding technology, which delivers current in controlled bursts rather than a continuous arc. The result is precise heat input, reduced spatter, less distortion, and significantly cleaner welds on aluminium and thin sheet materials. Combined with synergic wire feed, the machine effectively tunes itself to the job — the operator simply sets the material thickness and lets the welder optimise the parameters.

One Machine, Multiple Welding Processes

Although optimised for aluminium, the MWA160A is a true multi-process welder. It handles MIG/MAG welding with shielding gas, flux-cored (gasless) welding for outdoor or windy conditions, MMA stick welding for heavier fabrication and repair work, and TIG-Lift for precision work on stainless steel and other materials. One machine genuinely covers a wide range of applications, reducing the need for multiple specialist welders in the workshop.

IGBT Inverter Power in a Portable Package

IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) inverter technology delivers a stable, finely controlled arc with significantly higher energy efficiency than traditional transformer-based welders — meaning smoother starts, less spatter, and cleaner welds with lower power consumption. At just 14kg and measuring 425 x 220 x 320mm, the MWA160A is genuinely portable, with an integrated carry handle making it easy to move between jobs. Despite its compact size, it delivers a 60% duty cycle at 160A and 100% at 120A.

Who Is the MWA160A For?

This Draper aluminium welder is the right choice for professional fabricators, automotive repair specialists (including alloy panel and chassis repair), boat and marine engineers, custom builders, and advanced DIY users working with aluminium frames, panels, and components. Anyone who has struggled with aluminium on a standard MIG welder will appreciate the difference that purpose-built pulse welding makes.

Please Note

The MWA160A runs from a 230V supply but draws sufficient current at full output to require a 32A plug, which is not fitted as standard. Installation and plug fitting should be carried out by a qualified electrician to ensure correct and safe connection.
