A thermoplastic floor or road marking is only as durable as its bond to the surface beneath it. PROline thermal primers are the prep coat designed to deliver that bond — preparing concrete, asphalt, tar, composite paving, tiles and other "critical" substrates so that the thermoplastic marking applied on top adheres reliably, lasts longer and resists premature lifting under traffic.

Available as both pourable primers and convenient primer sprays, the range gives installers the right format for the job — pourable cans for large area prep, sprays for symbols, edges, repairs and tight detail work.

Key Features

  • Easy to use — straightforward application by any competent installer
  • Quick-drying — minimal wait between primer and thermoplastic application, keeping installation time tight
  • Optimal adhesion — engineered specifically to bond preformed thermoplastic markings (PROline-thermo) to demanding surfaces
  • Versatile compatibility — works across the most common industrial and highway substrates
  • Two formats — pourable primer for large areas and primer spray for symbols, detail work and repairs

When You Need a Primer — And When You Don't

Not every thermoplastic marking job needs a primer. PROline-thermo will adhere directly to clean, sound, dry asphalt or concrete under normal conditions. Where primers are recommended is on critical substrates — surfaces where direct adhesion is less reliable and where you want long-term performance, not just an initial bond.

Specify a primer when:

  • The substrate is dense, polished or low-porosity (smooth concrete, glazed tile, composite paving)
  • The surface is older, weathered or partially sealed — sealed asphalt, painted floors, previously coated surfaces
  • The marking will be subject to heavy traffic — distribution yards, busy car park entrances, loading docks
  • The installation is in a cold or marginal-weather window — primer dramatically improves adhesion when conditions are less than ideal
  • The substrate has been patched or repaired — repair compounds often have different surface chemistry to the surrounding base

If you're in any doubt, prime. The small additional cost and time at install dramatically extends marking service life and reduces the chance of having to revisit the site.

Choosing Between Primer and Primer Spray

The two formats serve different parts of the same job:

Pourable Primer The right choice for large continuous areas — long marking runs, full bay outlines, extensive arrows and chevron areas. Apply with a brush, roller or applicator suited to the area and let dry per the product instructions.

Primer Spray The right choice for symbols, letters, numbers, repair spots and detail work where pouring and rolling would be slow or wasteful. The spray format also makes touch-up on existing markings far quicker.

Most professional installers carry both, using the can for the bulk of the job and switching to spray for detail.

Surfaces and Applications

PROline thermal primers prepare surfaces for permanent thermoplastic marking across a wide range of environments:

  • Highways and adopted roads — line markings, hatching, lane symbols
  • Car parks and forecourts — bay markings, directional arrows, accessibility symbols
  • Industrial yards and depots — vehicle routing, pedestrian crossings, loading bay markings
  • Warehouses and logistics centres (external) — yard demarcation, fork truck routes
  • Schools, colleges and public-sector estates — playground markings, drop-off zones, parking
  • Commercial sites and retail parks — wayfinding, EV charging bay markings, fire lane identification

What is a thermoplastic primer for? A thermoplastic primer is a prep coat applied to the substrate before laying a preformed thermoplastic floor or road marking. It improves the bond between the thermoplastic and the surface — particularly on dense, polished, sealed, weathered or otherwise demanding substrates where direct adhesion would be marginal.

Do I always need to use a primer? No. On clean, sound, porous, dry asphalt or concrete under normal weather, thermoplastic markings can be applied directly. A primer is recommended on critical substrates (smooth concrete, sealed surfaces, composite paving, tile, repaired or weathered areas), for heavy-traffic applications, and when installing in cold or marginal conditions.

Which is better — pourable primer or primer spray? Neither is universally better — they serve different parts of the job. Use pourable primer for large continuous areas (long line runs, big bay outlines). Use primer spray for symbols, letters, numbers, repairs and detail work. Most professional crews carry both.

How long does the primer take to dry? PROline thermal primers are formulated to be quick-drying so installers can move from prep to thermoplastic application without long delays. Exact drying time depends on substrate, temperature, humidity and air movement — always follow the specific product datasheet for the variant you've ordered.

What surfaces can I use the primer on? The primers are designed for use on the substrates typically encountered in floor and road marking — concrete, asphalt, tar, composite paving and tiles. For unusual substrates (e.g. epoxy floors, metal, certain coated surfaces), check compatibility with our team before specifying.

Will the primer be visible after the thermoplastic is laid? No. The primer is fully overlaid by the thermoplastic marking, so colour and finish of the visible marking are determined by the thermoplastic itself, not the primer.

Is the primer suitable for outdoor use? Yes. PROline thermal primers are designed for the outdoor marking applications PROline-thermo is typically used for — highways, car parks, industrial yards, schools and commercial sites.

Are the primers compatible with brands other than PROline-thermo? The primers are formulated specifically for PROline-thermo preformed thermoplastic markings. While they may work with other thermoplastic systems, optimum performance is guaranteed only as part of the PROline system. For other brands, refer to that manufacturer's recommended primer.

Can I apply the primer in wet or cold weather? Surfaces should be dry before priming, and installation in extreme cold should follow the product datasheet's stated minimum temperature. In cold conditions, warming the substrate with a gas torch before priming dramatically improves adhesion.
