How to use a 16″ Wacker plate safely

Larger plates need a bit more respect than the lighter 12″ — they're heavier to manoeuvre, more powerful, and produce more vibration:

1. Move the plate to site with care — at 80kg it's a two-person lift, or use a sack truck/ramp
2. Prepare the ground — excavate to the required depth and remove any large debris
3. Lay your sub-base material in layers no thicker than 100mm
4. Lightly dampen the surface if dry to aid compaction
5. Start the engine and let it reach operating speed
6. Walk the plate slowly forward in overlapping passes
7. Run 3–4 passes per layer until the surface no longer settles
8. Compact in layers — add the next layer of material and repeat
9. Wear ear defenders, safety glasses, gloves and steel-toe boots — vibration and noise are higher on this size of plate

Hand-arm vibration exposure is higher on larger plates — for prolonged use, plan rotation between operators and follow current HSE guidance on vibration exposure limits.
