Weekly Hire: Vibrating Plate Compactor – Wacker Plate 16″
Hire a 16″ Wacker plate from Hall-Fast — the step-up plate compactor for larger driveways, commercial groundworks and serious landscaping projects. With a 400mm (16″) plate width and 1135kg (2500 lbs) of compaction force, this heavy-duty single-direction compactor settles a sub-base faster and more thoroughly than smaller machines — making it the go-to choice for contractors and ambitious DIY projects. Available for daily, weekend and weekly hire, with fast delivery across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby and the surrounding Midlands and Yorkshire regions.
Product code: HFHIRE069
Why choose the 16″ Wacker plate?
The 16″ vibrating plate compactor is built for bigger jobs and tougher materials. The wider plate covers more ground in fewer passes, and the higher centrifugal force drives compaction deeper into the sub-base — which means a more stable, longer-lasting result on driveways, car parks and large patio areas.
It's the right choice when:
- You're laying a larger residential driveway (typically 30m² or more)
- You're working on commercial or industrial groundworks
- Your sub-base is deeper or denser than a typical patio bed
- You're a professional contractor working to a tight schedule
- You need to finish big areas quickly with fewer passes
For smaller patios, garden paths and shed bases, the lighter 12″ Wacker plate is often the better fit — it's easier to handle and more manoeuvrable in tight spaces. Not sure which size you need? Call us — our team will happily advise.

What is the 16″ Wacker plate used for?
The 16″ plate compactor is built for jobs where the 12″ would be too slow or too underpowered:
- Larger residential driveways — block paving, tarmac and resin
- Commercial car parks and access roads — small to mid-scale groundworks
- Industrial yards and trade premises
- Deep sub-base compaction — multi-layer Type 1 / MOT hardcore
- Heavy patio installations — large slabs, porcelain, natural stone
- Construction site groundworks — building foundations, slab bases
- Trench reinstatement for utility works
- Large path and walkway projects — public realm, parks, schools
- Equestrian arenas and stable yards
- Hardstandings for sheds, garages and outbuildings
If you're working on anything over roughly 30m², the 16″ plate will save you significant time and produce a more reliably compacted finish.
Key features of the 16″ Wacker plate
- 400mm (16″) compacting width — covers more ground per pass
- 1135kg of centrifugal force — drives compaction deeper into the sub-base
- Heavy-duty steel plate — withstands intensive use on hardcore and aggregate
- Single-direction operation — straightforward to operate, no complex controls
- Folding handle (typical of this size) — easier to transport and store
- Professional-grade construction — built for repeated trade use
How to use a 16″ Wacker plate safely
Larger plates need a bit more respect than the lighter 12″ — they're heavier to manoeuvre, more powerful, and produce more vibration:
- Move the plate to site with care — at 80kg it's a two-person lift, or use a sack truck/ramp
- Prepare the ground — excavate to the required depth and remove any large debris
- Lay your sub-base material in layers no thicker than 100mm
- Lightly dampen the surface if dry to aid compaction
- Start the engine and let it reach operating speed
- Walk the plate slowly forward in overlapping passes
- Run 3–4 passes per layer until the surface no longer settles
- Compact in layers — add the next layer of material and repeat
- Wear ear defenders, safety glasses, gloves and steel-toe boots — vibration and noise are higher on this size of plate
Hand-arm vibration exposure is higher on larger plates — for prolonged use, plan rotation between operators and follow current HSE guidance on vibration exposure limits.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a 12″ and 16″ Wacker plate? The 16″ plate is wider (400mm vs 305mm), heavier (80kg vs 41kg) and significantly more powerful (1135kg vs 790kg of compaction force). The 16″ covers more ground per pass and compacts deeper, making it better for larger driveways, commercial work and serious sub-base compaction. The 12″ is more manoeuvrable and easier to handle for smaller jobs.
What size driveway needs a 16″ Wacker plate? As a rough guide, residential driveways over around 30m², or jobs with deeper-than-normal sub-bases, benefit from a 16″ plate. For most standard patios, paths and small driveways, a 12″ is plenty.
Can a 16″ Wacker plate be used by one person? Yes — operating the plate is a one-person job. However, at 80kg it's a two-person lift when loading and unloading from a vehicle. Plan ahead with ramps, a sack truck, or a second pair of hands.
Will it fit in my car? The 16″ plate is heavy enough (80kg) that it's best transported in a van, pickup or trailer rather than a typical car boot. The 12″ Wacker plate (41kg) is the better choice if you need to transport in a car.
Do I need a Wacker plate for block paving? Yes — proper compaction of the hardcore sub-base and settling of the laid pavers both require a plate compactor. The 16″ is well-suited to larger paving projects. For the final pass over laid blocks, fit a rubber mat to the plate to avoid scratching.
Do you deliver the 16″ Wacker plate? Yes — we deliver across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas, with nationwide delivery available on request. Given the weight, delivery is often the easiest option even for short-distance hires.
How long should I hire a 16″ Wacker plate for? For a typical larger residential driveway, a weekend or one-week hire is usually plenty. Larger commercial projects may need longer-term hire — call us for a tailored quote.
Is hiring a Wacker plate cheaper than buying one? For almost everyone, yes. Plate compactors are intensive-use tools that sit idle for long periods — and hiring saves on storage, servicing and the cost of ownership.
