What is a Wacker plate / vibrating plate compactor?

A vibrating plate compactor — commonly known as a Wacker plate in the UK — is a powered groundwork tool used to compress and level hardcore, sand, gravel and other loose sub-base materials. The flat steel plate on the bottom vibrates at high speed, driving air pockets out of the material and creating a solid, settled base ready for paving slabs, block paving, concrete or tarmac.

A properly compacted sub-base is the difference between a driveway or patio that lasts decades and one that sinks, cracks or develops puddles within a year — making the Wacker plate one of the most useful tools in any landscaping or groundwork project.

Why hire the 12″ Wacker plate?

The 12″ (305mm) plate compactor is the most popular size for residential and small commercial projects. It hits the sweet spot between:

  • Compact size — fits between block edges, on narrow paths and through standard gateways
  • Light weight (41kg) — easy to lift in and out of a van or car boot
  • Genuine compaction force (790kg / 1742lbs) — more than enough to settle a properly laid sub-base
  • Single-direction operation — simple to use, no complicated controls
  • Suitable for DIY and trade — no specialist training required

If you're laying a driveway, patio, garden path or shed base, the 12″ Wacker plate is the right tool for the job. For larger commercial groundworks, you may need a heavier 16″ or 20″ plate — give us a call and we can advise.

What can you use a 12″ Wacker plate for?

The 12″ vibrating plate compactor is ideal for a wide range of landscaping, groundwork and surface-prep tasks:

  • Driveway sub-base compaction — settling Type 1 / MOT hardcore before laying block paving or tarmac
  • Patio bases — compacting hardcore before laying paving slabs
  • Block paving — settling the sand bed and locking in the pavers after laying
  • Garden paths and walkways — creating a stable, level base
  • Shed and outbuilding bases — preparing the ground before laying a concrete or paving base
  • Resin driveway preparation — ensuring the sub-base is solid before resin application
  • Artificial grass sub-base — compacting the aggregate base for a flat, even finish
  • Pothole and trench reinstatement — small repair work
  • Soil compaction — for fencing, decking and small foundation jobs

How to use a Wacker plate (quick guide)

  1. Prepare the ground — remove topsoil and excavate to the required depth
  2. Lay your sub-base material (typically Type 1 MOT hardcore) in layers no more than 75–100mm deep
  3. Wet the surface lightly if the material is very dry — a little moisture aids compaction
  4. Start the Wacker plate and let the engine reach operating speed
  5. Walk the plate slowly over the surface in straight, overlapping passes
  6. Repeat passes until the surface no longer settles further (usually 3–4 passes per layer)
  7. Compact in layers — add the next layer of material and repeat the process
  8. Finish with a final levelling pass before laying your top surface

Wear sturdy boots, ear defenders and safety glasses when operating any plate compactor. Always read the operator's manual before use, and never leave the plate running unattended.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Wacker plate used for? A Wacker plate (vibrating plate compactor) is used to compact hardcore, sand, gravel and other sub-base materials, creating a solid, level foundation for driveways, patios, paths, shed bases and similar landscaping projects.

Can I use a Wacker plate as a beginner? Yes — the 12″ Wacker plate is suitable for DIY users with no previous experience. It's single-direction, lightweight and straightforward to operate. We provide guidance with every hire, and you should always read the operator's manual before starting work.

How heavy is the 12″ Wacker plate? The 12″ plate weighs 41kg (90 lbs), making it light enough for one person to load and unload from a car or van.

What size Wacker plate do I need for a driveway? For a typical residential driveway, the 12″ (305mm) plate is usually ideal. It's powerful enough to properly compact a sub-base while still being narrow enough to manoeuvre. For very large driveways or commercial projects, a 16″ or 20″ plate may be more efficient — call us for advice.

Do I need a separate plate for block paving? The same 12″ plate is suitable for both compacting the hardcore sub-base and settling the sand bed / pavers after laying. For the final pass over block paving, fit a rubber mat to the plate (available on request) to avoid scratching the blocks.

How long should I hire a Wacker plate for? For a typical residential driveway or patio, a weekend or one-week hire is usually plenty. Smaller jobs like a path or shed base can be done in a day. Call us for a tailored quote based on your project.

Do you deliver Wacker plates? Yes — we deliver across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas, with nationwide delivery available on request.

Is hiring a Wacker plate cheaper than buying one? For almost every homeowner and most contractors, yes. Wacker plates are intensive-use tools that sit idle for long periods — and a hire saves on storage, servicing and the cost of ownership.
