Weekly Hire: Concrete Breakers – Medium
Hire a medium-duty electric concrete breaker from Hall-Fast — the right-sized breaker for jobs that are too big for a hammer drill, but too small for a full road breaker. Running on 110V site power at 900W and delivering 2000 blows per minute, this medium breaker is ideal for breaking up patio slabs, chasing out walls, removing tiles and screed, and light to mid-scale demolition work. Available for daily, weekend and weekly hire, with fast delivery across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby and the surrounding Midlands and Yorkshire regions.
Product code: HFHIRE070
What is a medium concrete breaker?
A medium concrete breaker is a powered demolition tool that sits between an SDS rotary hammer drill and a heavy-duty road breaker. Designed for controlled breaking of concrete, screed, brickwork and tiles, it gives you serious impact force without the bulk, weight or noise of a full-size breaker — making it the most versatile size of breaker for both trade and DIY users.
The "medium" sizing matters: it's powerful enough to make real progress on solid concrete, but light enough to handle for extended periods and to work at angles a heavy breaker simply can't.
Important — this is a 110V site-voltage breaker
This breaker runs on 110V, the standard voltage for construction sites in the UK. To use it on a domestic 240V mains supply (e.g. at home in a garage, driveway or garden), you'll need a step-down transformer — also available to hire from Hall-Fast. Give us a call and we'll add one to your hire.
Why 110V? Site-voltage tools are safer in wet, outdoor and harsh conditions because the lower voltage greatly reduces the risk of severe electric shock. It's the standard required on most professional sites and is widely used by contractors for that reason.

What can you use a medium concrete breaker for?
The medium breaker is built for jobs where you need real demolition power, but where a heavy breaker would be overkill — or where you need to work at angles other than vertical:
- Breaking up patio slabs and concrete paving
- Removing tiles and screed from floors
- Chasing out walls for cables, pipes and conduits
- Breaking up small concrete bases (shed bases, post bases, light slabs)
- Removing render and plaster from masonry walls
- Demolishing brick and block walls
- Light to mid-scale demolition in renovation projects
- Cutting in for new doorways and openings (with appropriate support — see Strongboy hire and Acrow prop hire)
- Removing chimney breasts at high level
- Bathroom and kitchen rip-outs — tiles, screed, and tile beds
For breaking up driveways, large concrete slabs or road surfaces, a heavy breaker is the better choice. For light chasing and small demolition jobs, a standard SDS rotary hammer may be enough. Not sure? Call us — we'll match the right tool to the job.
Key features of our medium concrete breaker
- 110V site voltage — safe, regulation-compliant for site use
- 900W motor — strong demolition power in a manageable package
- 2000 blows per minute — fast, efficient breaking action
- Lighter and more manoeuvrable than a heavy road breaker
- Works at any angle — vertical, horizontal or overhead with care
- Quieter than a petrol breaker — better suited to indoor and residential work
- Fully inspected and PAT-tested before every hire
How to use a medium concrete breaker safely
- Check the power supply — is it 110V site supply? If not, you'll need a step-down transformer
- Inspect the tool, lead and chisel before starting work
- Wear full PPE — safety glasses, ear defenders, dust mask, gloves and steel-toe boots
- Mark out your line clearly before breaking
- Position the chisel at a slight angle to the surface, not straight in
- Let the tool do the work — don't lean your weight onto it; the impact comes from the hammer action
- Work in short bursts to manage hand-arm vibration exposure
- Damp down dust with a water mist for indoor work — concrete dust contains silica, a serious respiratory hazard
- Take regular breaks to manage fatigue and vibration exposure
- Switch off and unplug before changing chisels or making adjustments
Concrete and tile dust contains crystalline silica, which is a serious long-term respiratory hazard. Always wear an FFP3-rated dust mask and use water suppression or extraction where possible. Follow current HSE guidance on Construction Dust and Hand-Arm Vibration.

Frequently asked questions
What is a medium concrete breaker used for? A medium concrete breaker is used for breaking up patio slabs, removing tiles and screed, chasing out walls, light demolition and similar mid-scale demolition jobs. It's the most versatile size of breaker for both trade and DIY users.
Can I use this breaker at home? Yes — but because it's a 110V site-voltage tool, you'll need a step-down transformer to use it from a standard 240V mains socket. We hire transformers alongside the breaker; just mention it when you book.
Why is it 110V instead of 240V? 110V is the UK site-voltage standard because it's significantly safer in wet, dusty or harsh conditions. The lower voltage greatly reduces the risk of severe electric shock — which is why almost all professional construction sites mandate 110V tools.
What's the difference between a medium and a heavy concrete breaker? A medium breaker is lighter, easier to handle and suited to mid-scale demolition like patios, walls and screed. A heavy breaker delivers far more impact force and is needed for breaking up driveways, large slabs and concrete foundations — but it's also much heavier, louder and more fatiguing to use. Call us if you're unsure which class is right for your job.
Do I need to bring my own chisels? No — chisels and points are available with the hire. Tell us what you're breaking when you book and we'll include the right ones.
Can I break up a driveway with this breaker? You can, but a heavy breaker will do it significantly faster and with less operator fatigue. For driveways, foundations and slabs over about 150mm thick, the heavy breaker is the better choice. The medium breaker is fine for patios, paths and screed.
Do you deliver concrete breakers? Yes — we deliver across Nottingham, Mansfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Coventry and surrounding areas, with nationwide delivery available on request.
How long should I hire a concrete breaker for? For most jobs a day or weekend hire is enough. Larger jobs may need a week or longer — call us for a tailored quote.
Is hiring a concrete breaker cheaper than buying one? For almost everyone, yes. A breaker is a short-burst tool that's idle for long periods. Hiring saves on storage, servicing and capital outlay, and you always work with inspected, PAT-tested kit.
